Hi, We're One Dissection!

Alright everyone, here is that big "mystery project" of mine! And if you read some of my previous journals...from like, months ago, then you might have already guessed this would be coming. Y'know, waaaaaay back when I mentioned that fandom collision I had in mind that should have kicked me out of fandoms? Well, this was it.

I know it's probably not obvious from Deviantart, but I recently have become absolutely OBSESSED with the boyband One Direction. Like, really obsessed. Like, unhealthily obsessed. I don't even know how or why it happened, but it did. And I don't regret it. Those five boys are now a large part of my life, and there is now not a single day that goes by without me thinking or saying or listening to One Direction.

So yeah, when I fangirl over things hardcore, eventually I will express my love with artwork. Since mid-July I started working on a traditional 1D piece with portraits of the boys... And let's just say that mother is still a WIP. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, and if even the littlest thing is off, I scrap the drawing and re-start. Thus far I've drawn Louis, Niall, and Liam twice, Harry once, and Zayn three times. I'm still not happy with any of my Liam or Zayn drawings, and am contemplating whether or not I'm content with my only Harry one. It's been extremely frustrating, to say the least. So I decided to take a break, and during that break I ended up messing around with my tablet and SAI and before I knew it I had the rought sketch of a group portrait.

And that's when I decided to start this madness. I've been sort of live-tweeting the event on my Twitter with the name #MonsterHighmeets1D. And finally, after about 40-50hrs of hard work, it is finally complete!

So, I present to you all: One Dissection (because obviously I needed to give them a fitting, punny MH-verse name). From left to right, we have: Zayn, Harry, Louis, Liam, and Niall.

No, I didn't get around to inventing fitting MH-verse names for the lads. Maybe I'll bother someday, though.

Now, I didn't just pick monsters out of thin air, either. Because obviously I'm Holly and that would be unacceptable! Soooo, onto le reasoning!

Zayn Malik: Gargoyle
Gargoyles remind me first and foremost of rocks, and rocks make me think of concepts like "grounded" and "stoic," which to me, fit Zayn rather well. He's easily the most private of the boys, a bit quiet and mysterious with a definite depth to him. Regardless of how loud and outgoing he can be around the other boys, Zayn is still, for the most part, the boy I find most reserved and quiet. And to me, a gargoyle just seemed like the right choice.


Harry Styles: Zombie
Soooo...basically....Harry is just...erm...kind of...slow. At least, when he talks. And really, I just thought it'd be hilarious to make him a zombie, simply because of that. And Harry's kind of adorably awkward...and kind of reminded me of Ghoulia? In a weird way? Okay, so it was mostly to poke fun at how slow he talks.

And although most zombies in the MH world have a blue-hued skin, I found that blue skin on Harry next to bluey-grey gargoyle Zayn was just a tad overwhelming. Soooo, brown-hued zombie it is! Besides, why should all zombies look the exact same?


Louis Tomlinson: Imp
Louis never wants to grow up. He is like a big child, forever young and full of fun, living to make the most out of life. So...it seemed like a no-brainer to make Louis a member of the faerie family. And imp, specifically, because they are very mischievous...and Lou is also very mischievous. Not to mention that faeries are immortal and therefore will live for millenia whilst maintaining a youthful appearance.

I kind of played with him design-wise. There's no specific description of what imps look like, so I just had fun with it. Not sure how the little claw bracelets on his wrists ended up there, it was all kind of improvised.


Liam Payne: Werewolf
Liam is a puppy dog. A big, cute, adorable, lovable, loyal puppy dog, with the puppy dog eyes to match. There was no other possible choice for him than a big, cute, lovable, loyal, werewolf.


Niall Horan: Pooka
Niall was the hardest for me, by far. I wanted to use an Irish monster to place emphasis on him being Irish (duh). BUT, I did not want to make him a lephrechaun...so I did some researching, and eventually settled on a pooka. Another member of the fey folk, also mischievous. Pookas are shapeshifters....which made sense to me for Niall, because he must be a shapeshifter. It's the only explanation for how he can go from being all cute and cuddly and adorable to a complete fucking sex god (sorry not sorry, it had to be said).

Most mythology describes pookas taking the form of a horse.....but I decided to give Niall a more...horned monkey-ish look? I really have no explanation for him, design-wise. It just sort of happened, and I ran with it.

So yes, that is One Dissection! Outfits and the color scheme were inspired by clothing the boys wore during their 2012 "Up All Night" tour, which basically means what you're seeing them wearing here is pretty much a showcase of their individual styles. Oh, and the random shit on Zayn's arm are all tattoos that he legit has in real life. How they're placed here are most likely a tad off, but I tried to place them as correctly as possible. Hairstyles are well, their hairstyles. And I am soooo happy with how they turned out! Hair is always a massive bitch for me to do, and easily one of the most stressful parts of drawing/coloring for me...but I think I did well with it here.

Background is merely a combination of the British and Irish flags, to pay homage to the boys' nationalities. And that's also the official One Direction font.

Well, that is pretty much all I have to say. I put a lot of effort into this, and time, and basically poured my heart into making it look as good as I could. I'm more than pleased with the results, and I hope you all like it as much as I do!

There will definitely be lots more artwork of the boys to come. I'll for sure be doing more cartoon representations of them, although not always in these MH personas. I'll do cartoon versions of them being themselves, as humans, too. Aaaand, it is now 4:00AM. I need to get to bed!

Oh, and I almost forgot! I made the full-sized version available to download if you'd like to use it as a wallpaper! However, this does not mean you have the right to put it up anywhere else on the internet or claim it as your own. Hence why there's a little watermark. I like to make my watermarks as small as possible so as not to distract from the art itself...but if I find out it's been stolen or anything, then obviously watermarks will get bigger and the download option will be removed.
